INSPIRING ENERGY EFFICIENCY IN SCHOOL AND BEYOND

Published on: March 12, 2025

At Generation E, we see energy efficiency as more than just a lesson. By equipping students with the right knowledge and resources, we empower them to become leaders in their homes, schools, and communities. Students have the power to influence their families and peers to make energy-saving habits a lifelong commitment.

With Earth Hour and Earth Day right around the corner, now is the perfect time to spark conversations about sustainability, engage students in energy-conscious activities, and inspire lasting change.

EARTH HOUR: ONE HOUR FOR COLLECTIVE IMPACT

Earth Hour takes place on March 22 at 8:30 p.m. this year, and it’s a powerful reminder that small actions can make a big difference. By simply turning off lights and unplugging unnecessary electronics for one hour, students and their families can join millions of people around the world in reducing energy consumption.

But Earth Hour is about more than just one evening without electricity. It’s a chance to start a conversation about energy efficiency. Use this opportunity to ask your students the following questions:

  • What devices do we leave on that we don’t need?
  • How can we reduce our energy use beyond just one hour?
  • How does our energy use impact the environment?

Encouraging students to reflect on these questions helps them recognize how their daily choices can lead to meaningful change. Challenge them to keep the momentum going beyond Earth Hour by committing to ongoing energy-saving habits.

EARTH DAY: BEYOND ONE DAY OF ACTION

On April 22, we celebrate Earth Day, a global event dedicated to environmental protection. While the “lights off” movement for Earth Hour is a way to show support in the fight against climate change and nature loss, Earth Day reminds us that taking cate of the planet is a long-term commitment.

This is the perfect time to engage students in hands-on activities that promote environmental awareness and encourage them to think critically about energy use.

Here are some ideas to get started:

  • Using our Lights Out activity, where students will be tasked with creating a plan for how they’ll respond to three days without electricity.
  • Brainstorming ways to reduce energy waste at home and making a commitment to share these ideas with their families.

EMPOWERING STUDENTS TO TAKE THE LEAD

The best way to make energy efficiency a lasting habit? Let students take charge! When they become energy ambassadors in their schools and homes, they inspire those around them to do the same.

Encourage students to do the following:

  • Share what they’ve learned with their families. Can they get their household to commit to turning off unused lights or using energy-efficient appliances?
  • Teach their classmates. Can they lead a discussion or create posters about saving energy?
  • Start an energy-saving challenge. Who can reduce their screen time the most? Who can remember to unplug devices every day?

By turning students into active participants, you can make saving energy fun, engaging, and impactful.
