TRANSFORM YOUR SCIENCE CURRICULUM WITH FREE ENERGY EFFICIENCY LESSONS

Published on: April 14, 2025

Learning is about discovery, and what a better way to engage your students than exploring something that affects them every day — energy! With Generation E’s free and ready-to-use lesson plans, activities, and presentations, you can easily bring energy efficiency into your classroom in a way that’s hands-on, fun, and connected to real-world challenges.

Plus, our resources align with Manitoba’s curriculum, so you can be sure your lessons are hitting the right learning outcomes while sparking curiosity and action.

HOW OUR LESSONS ALIGN WITH YOUR SCIENCE CURRICULUM

We know curriculum alignment is important, so we’ve designed our materials to fit right into your lesson plans. Here’s how Generation E connects with key science outcomes in Grade 6 and Grade 9.

Grade 6 – The Electricity Cluster

Our Grade 6 resources are a perfect match for the Electricity Cluster.

Curriculum connection: 6-3-18 Describe factors that affect the consumption of electrical energy and outline an action plan to reduce electrical energy consumption at home, at school, or in the community.

  • Classroom Checklist: Students will learn how classrooms use energy and why using less of it matters. They’ll use a daily checklist to track energy-saving actions, like turning off lights and unplugging electronics, helping them build mindful, energy-efficient habits.
  • Lights Out!: Students will create a plan for surviving three days without electricity. They’ll consider how their daily routines would change, including transportation, entertainment, meals, and cooking methods.

Your students won’t just learn about energy use — they’ll create real action plans to reduce it! Instead of memorizing facts, they’re thinking critically, making decisions, and taking action to promote sustainability.

 Key general learning outcomes supported:

  • B5: Identify and demonstrate actions that promote a sustainable environment, society, and economy, both locally and globally.
  • C4: Demonstrate appropriate critical thinking and decision-making skills when choosing a course of action based on scientific and technological information.
  • E4: Recognize that energy, whether transmitted or transformed, is the driving force of both movement and change, and is inherent within materials and in the interactions among them.

Grade 9 – The Nature of Electricity Cluster

Our Grade 9 resources help students explore saving energy in a way that’s practical and engaging for their age.

Curriculum connection: S1-3-23 Recognize and explain the importance of incorporating principles of electrical energy conservation into the decision-making process.

  • Local Business Interview: Students will explore how businesses use and save energy. Working in groups, they’ll interview a local business about its energy efficiency, then present their findings to the class, comparing and discussing insights.
  • All About Energy: Students will learn about energy, its uses, environmental impact, and the importance of using it wisely. Then, they’ll play a 20-questions game to guess energy-related words, promoting critical thinking, teamwork, and energy efficiency awareness.
  • Kilowatts to Dollars: Students will calculate the cost savings of energy efficiency upgrades using real-world examples. This math-based exercise helps them understand the financial benefits of energy efficiency.

These lessons encourage students to think critically about how energy use affects their lives, helping them connect scientific knowledge to decision-making.

Key general learning outcomes supported:

  • B2: Recognize that scientific and technological endeavours have been and continue to be influenced by human needs and the societal context of the time.
  • B5: Identify and demonstrate actions that promote a sustainable environment, society, and economy, both locally and globally.
  • C4: Demonstrate appropriate critical thinking and decision-making skills when choosing a course of action based on scientific and technological information.
  • C8: Evaluate, from a scientific perspective, information and ideas encountered during investigations and in daily life.
